What is Web Design?

Web design is the process of planning, conceptualizing and organizing online content. Web design today goes beyond aesthetics to include overall website functionality. Web design also includes web applications, mobile applications and user interface design.
Did you know that web design can have a huge impact on your performance in search engines like Google? This article will provide you with useful information on how to create a website that not only looks good, but also functions properly and ranks high in search engines.
Web design refers to the design of web pages that appear on the Internet. This usually relates to the user experience aspects of website development rather than software development. Web design used to focus on designing websites for desktop browsers; however, since the mid-2010s, design for mobile and tablet browsers has become increasingly important.
A web designer works on the appearance, layout and in some cases the content of a website. For example, appearance is related to the colors, fonts and images used. Layout refers to how information is structured and categorized. A good web design is easy to use, aesthetically pleasing, and suits the user group and brand of the site. Many websites are designed with simplicity in mind, so no redundant information and features appear to distract or confuse users. Since the cornerstone of a web designer's output is a website that earns and maintains the trust of its target audience, eliminating as many potential points of user frustration as possible is a critical consideration.
Two of the most common methods for designing websites that work well on both desktop and mobile devices are responsive and adaptive design. In responsive design, content moves dynamically depending on the size of the screen; in adaptive design, web page content is fixed in layout sizes that match common screen sizes. Keeping a layout that is as consistent as possible across devices is critical to maintaining user trust and engagement. Since responsive design can present difficulties in this regard, designers must be careful about relinquishing control over how their work will look. If they are also responsible for content and may need to expand their skills, they will have the benefit of full control over the finished product.
Web design is the creation of websites and pages that reflect a company's brand and information and ensure a user-friendly experience. Appearance and design are important elements whether you are designing a website, mobile app or maintaining content on a website. Gaining web design skills can help you apply for roles where your creativity could help a business improve its brand, its message and its bottom line.
In this article, we'll take a look at web design, including what web designers do and the common web design elements they work with and use.

What do web designers do?

Web design identifies the goals of a website or web pages and promotes accessibility for all potential users. This process involves organizing content and images across a series of pages and integrating applications and other interactive elements.
The professionals who carry out this process are called web designers and their work includes the following duties:

  • A selection of easy-to-read fonts
  • A selection of attractive color schemes that also allow for easy-to-read fonts
  • Implementing brand identity into colors, fonts and layouts
  • Creating a site structure map to ensure intuitive navigation
  • Placement of images, logos, text, videos, applications and other elements
  • Using coding languages such as HTML and CSS to create page layouts and styling
  • Creating optimized versions of websites and pages for viewing on computers and mobile devices
There are two common methods of web design: adaptive and responsive design. In responsive design, web page content is created using standard screen sizes as a layout framework.
In responsive design, the content moves dynamically according to the size of the screen. Web designers use different steps of the general web design process to utilize these design methods depending on their client's or employer's web preferences and goals.

What are the elements of web design?

The web design process allows designers to adjust to any preferences and provide effective solutions. There are many standard components of every web design, including:

Layout

The layout of the website is how the material is displayed on a page. Choosing the layout is an essential task for the designer. It should be simple, intuitive and accessible. Web designers can use blank areas called white spaces to organize the elements of the site with grid-based designs to keep them in order.
Designers can create specialized layouts for desktop screens and mobile devices. Mobile-friendly websites are a necessity because many visitors access websites on their cellphones or tablets.
To ensure a website is ready for mobile visitors, the designer can use a responsive template that adapts to different screen sizes or a mobile-only look that will activate when a non-desktop device connects to the website. A consistent layout between supports contributes to the visitors' trust.

Images

Images are illustrations, graphics, photographs, icons and others used to provide supplementary information to the text. To create the effect desired, designers can pick images that complement each other and the brand that the website represents.

Visual hierarchy

Visual hierarchy is the order in which the user will process the information on the site. The designer creates it by applying a visual pattern to the website. The visual pattern is the way the design directs visitors' eyes and behaviors.
For example, F-Patterns or Z-Patterns emphasize the top horizontal section of your site, where most designers place navigation and the brand's logo and sometimes a search box. These are elements that inspire user interaction and brand recognition.

Color scheme

The color scheme is a combination of colors that is in harmony with the brand and industry it represents. To achieve this, they will pick a dominant color and a few others to create a palette. A color palette can be monochromatic (different shades of the same color), analogous (colors close to each other) or complementary. Designers also account for what colors users are more likely to be attracted to.

Typography

The typography is the style or font of the written content. Web designers pick one or a combination that is attractive and easy to read. To make the best choice, they should choose a font that corresponds to the target audience. Some sites may be better in serif fonts while others can use non-serif fonts, depending on the site's industry, purpose and typical user.

Readability

Readability is when the text of content is easy to see and read on a webpage. The text on the website should be readable because visitors usually spend little time on it and should find information quickly. The designers can achieve this by selecting an appropriate size and pixel for the text. The contrast between the text and the site's background colors also improves readability.

Navigation

The navigational elements are the tools allowing users to choose where they want to go within a website. They may be present in the header, body and footer of the website, depending on the site's layout and structure. These elements are essential as they direct visitors to the information they want as quickly as possible.
Designers can choose a variety of navigation designs and layouts, such as using a button that hides and reveal navigation menus. They can also incorporate one-click arrows and other buttons that direct users back to the top of a page, to a specific area of a page or another page entirely.

Content

Content is all of the information available on the website. It is a pivotal element because visitors want to get information quickly. When the website communicates clearly and grabs the readers' attention, it is more likely to convert them into consumers. The designer can achieve this by using the appropriate tone and provide the right information on the entire website, including the "About" and "Contact" pages.

What is the use of web design?

Web design is used to achieve a variety of tasks and goals, including:
Search Engine Optimization: Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is a method of increasing the chances of a website being found by search engines. Web design encodes information so that search engines can read it. It can boost business as the website appears on the first pages of search results and helps people find it.
Customer satisfaction: Professional web design positively affects client satisfaction because it quickly provides them with the information they are looking for. It helps a company build a positive relationship with visitors by ensuring that navigation on its website is easy to understand, predictable and consistent.
Mobile Responsiveness: Mobile responsiveness is a feature of a website that allows it to be displayed on a mobile device and adjust its layout and proportions to be readable. The web design ensures easy viewing and navigation of the site from mobile devices. When a website is well designed and mobile responsive, customers can easily reach out to the business.
Consistent Branding: Branding refers to the promotion of a product with a unique design. Web design helps companies build or maintain a clear brand for their business. When a website expresses a brand consistently, it makes navigation easier and helps customers more clearly identify the brand's visuals as a specific company and its products or services.
Technical Efficiency: This term refers to how productive a website can be in creating a comfortable experience on the web. Designers can achieve this by using clean coding that allows for fast loading, working links, and dynamic images and graphics. Web design services also fix these potential glitches when they occur.
User experience optimization: Web designers run reports to understand how people around the world interact with the web. They find out which pages get more or less traffic and adapt the website design to optimize the user experience.
Conversion: A conversion occurs when a website visitor completes a desired action. Attractive web design encourages visitors to stay long enough to become consumers. They click a call-to-action button, exchange valuable information, and subscribe or buy a product.
Improve sales: The goal of an impressive website is to increase the number of items sold or get more active customers. How web design appeals to targeted customers and search engines helps a business convert on their site and improve their sales.

Types of Website Design: Adaptive vs. Responsive

Understanding the pros and cons of adaptive and responsive websites will help you determine which website builder will work best for your website design needs.
You might come across articles online that talk about a whole bunch of different website design styles (fixed, static, fluid, etc.). However, in today’s mobile-centric world, there are only two website styles to use to properly design a website: adaptive and responsive.

Adaptive websites

Adaptive web design uses two or more versions of a website that are customized for specific screen sizes. Adaptive websites can be split into two main categories based upon how the site detects what size needs to be displayed:

1. Adapts based on device type

When your browser connects to a website, the HTTP request will include a field called “user-agent” that will inform the server about the type of device attempting to view the page. The adaptive website will know what version of the site to display based on what device is trying to reach it (i.e. desktop, mobile, tablet). Issues will arise if you shrink the browser window on a desktop because the page will continue to display the “desktop version” rather than shrinking to the new size.

2. Adapts based on browser width

Instead of using the “user-agent”, the website uses media queries (a CSS feature that enables a webpage to adapt to different screen sizes) and breakpoints (certain width sizes) to switch between versions. So instead of having a desktop, tablet, and mobile version, you will have 1080px, 768px, and 480px width versions. This offers more flexibility when designing, and a better viewing experience as your website will adapt based on screen width.

Pros:

  • WYSIWYG editing (what you see is what you get)
  • Custom designs are faster and easier to build without code
  • Cross-browser and cross-device compatibility
  • Fast-loading pages

Cons:

  • Websites that use “device-type” can look broken when viewed in a smaller browser window on a desktop
  • Limitations on certain effects that only responsive sites can accomplish

Responsive Websites

Responsive websites can use flexible grid layouts that are based on the percentage each element takes up in its container: if one element (e.g. a header) is 25% of its container, that element will stay at 25% no matter the change in screen size. Responsive websites can also use breakpoints to create a custom look at every screen size, but unlike adaptive sites that adapt only when they hit a breakpoint, responsive websites are constantly changing according to the screen size.
